Remember when Jay Z got some celebs and artists like Marina Abramovich, Alan Cumming, and Jim Jarmusch together which a bunch of very lucky fans to film “Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film” at the PACE Gallery in 2013? Jay Z set out with the stated intention of bringing the arts back together with hip-hop, in a way they had been when Fab 5 Freddy and Madonna were hanging out with Basquiat. But didn’t it feel kind of… forced?
It starts in a Motown style with the chorus which uses a dotted and sustained two-note motif on the lyric — title and hapless subject “Jerome,” with variations — before the verses crank up the pace. Enjoy and take note of the contrast.

The simple, digital BOSS DD-7 is small, durable and has the ability to tap delay time very accurately. Another unique pedal, which has its own sound entirely, is the VOX Delay Lab, which offers a pitch shifting delay mode to really turn your signal upside down! It will add one octave up to the note you are playing as the first echo you hear. The second echo you hear is an octave up from that, and so on… It’s such a dreamy swarm of tones, you should give it a try at your local guitar store sometime! As much as I love this pedal, it’s actually enormous, and no longer fits on my board, so for something a bit more compact you can try the BOSS PS-3.
Focus: Further develop production abilities in the trap style.
This course covers quite a bit of ground. It starts with some Ableton basics, and then moves through important concepts like velocity, variation, and sound design, closing out with an intro to advanced techniques. Robin was a remarkable student who came into the course pretty new to Ableton and ended up creating this awesome, professional-sounding track. There are so many cool elements at play here. It’s a really nice blend of variety and cohesion from start to finish. Check it out, but be warned that you may end up leaving it on repeat.
After mapping out the framework between the chords, bass, and drum loops, I found a perfect vocal loop to sneak into this track. That’s Kim Mayo’s (of The Love Experiment and Moonheart) incredible and undeniably unique voice first sampled at 0:22.
This is a two-part course series dedicated to sampling found sounds at home and turning them into all kinds of beats and tracks in Ableton Live. The first part is taught by Ableton Certified Trainer Brian Jackson, and concerns how to capture sounds using a simple microphone setup at home, and warp them into useable raw materials in Ableton. The second part follows famed YouTuber, beat maker, and educator Andrew Huang as he makes an incredibly compelling song out of nothing but sounds from a kitchen pot — and explains his process step by step on camera.

“Finesse” (Remix): Cardi B drops herself into this remix in a relatively extended intro. There’s also a pre-chorus, as well as a fake-out bridge which I’m going to call a “pre-bridge” (P2). My favorite part of this section, this song, and maybe this entire study in general, is that just when you think the whole thing is going to be done over the three-chord loop of♭VI V i, they throw in a ♭vii to ♭III turnaround, or, for the functionally minded, a “ii V I” that resolves back to D♭. This tonal trick, as well as the extensions and voicings, are really typical of the era they’re harkening back to in the video. Super clever.
As social media continues to create opportunities to interact directly with fans, it is important to be proactive on each of your channels to make sure you’re aggregating every potential listener. In fact, any one item can be a costume: a funky, customized necklace, a big, bold hat, or even some sort of prop that helps you get into character on stage and channel a new identity. The one important thing to keep in mind is how everyone on stage interacts together visually; it’s essential to be unified somehow. If you have one person showing up in a suit, another dressed like a punk, and another wearing a neon bodysuit all you’ll be saying is that you don’t know what to say.
Let’s examine the guitar more closely. Imagine that the guitar’s low E string has a frequency of 1 Hz. (It’s really 82.4069 Hz; feel free to multiply everything in this next section by that number if you want actual frequencies.) You want your high E string to be tuned two octaves higher than the low one, at 4 Hz. Let’s see if you can get there by tuning the strings pairwise.
