Course: The Art of Hip-Hop Production
Focus: Work on three different song seeds and further them along in the composition and songwriting process.
We briefly mentioned “Suzanne” by Leonard Cohen earlier. Aside from the religious references, it was also originally a poem Cohen wrote and published before the song was ever recorded. Try writing a poem purely on pen and paper, without worrying about melody or rhythm at all. Once you’ve got a solid draft, try setting it to music. Ultimately, you might need to be inventive or make some changes to make everything flow nicely, but this can produce good results.

The piece follows this brief introduction with a tempo change from Sostenuto (66 BPM) to Misurato (106 bpm). The tempo will change again to Prestissimo later on in the piece, helping to create a sense of momentum with an increasingly faster beat.
The type of sample or synth you use will also determine how you shape the line. We have George Frideric Handel to thank for the next example, in a melody that would later be adapted as the holiday standard, “Joy to the World.” The minor second interval here appears with the lyrics “joy” and “to” at 0:04 in the version below. Easy enough!

Oh! And look up over there on the right. I’m very excited to share with you a new statistic I collected this year. Would you believe that 22 songs out of 40 were based off of just one single loop only (loop variations allowed)? That’s more than half. You may now commence to argue over how uncreative music is these days, or over how Einstein really did prove that “less is more.”
