With overwhelmingly positive results, we’re happy to share a few select testimonials of Soundfly’s Beginner Harmonic Theory course directly from our students.
Our in-house music business guru, Jay Coyle, has managed crowdfunding and direct-to-fan campaigns for bands like the Barenaked Ladies, Veruca Salt, and the Presidents of the United States of America (to name a mere handful). He always instructs his clients to be themselves and share their stories genuinely when communicating with their fanbases.
It has gone down in history as one of the most epic Super Bowl performances ever, and these halftime shows are already pretty epic in and of themselves. In 40 years, it had never rained at a Super Bowl, and Prince really brought the party with four absolutely perfect songs for the occasion, and, of course, the one. “Purple Rain” is later in the video, but the whole thing is a good watch.

This is an alternate picking exercise that I used to build speed early on in my career. It’s incredibly effective, and you can employ the concept in your soloing. It’s called “modal alternate picking.”
Brown proved he was a different type of entertainer with this album. Although he isn’t doing anything new, yet, the way he directed the band and interacted with the audience felt revolutionary. He took what other band leaders were doing and upped the ante, upped the energy, and all-around raised the bar to set a new normal for how flamboyant and confident an entertainer should be. His exuberance can be heard throughout the performance.
The problem is that these tendencies are the exact opposite of what we should be doing if we want to see real improvement, according to Dr. Anders Ericsson. And we might be wise to listen. Dr. Ericsson is widely considered one of the foremost thinkers on the subject of “expertise.” His research is one of the primary sources that inspired Malcolm Gladwell’s now-famous “10,000 Hour Rule” — that it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to be an expert in anything. But that rule, though memorable, is far from the whole story.
The lines to enter grocery stores are often hours long, and most are limiting purchases to ration supply. Queues for gas are absurd, and ATMs are frequently out of service. Water has been restored to Lalita’s area, but without electricity, it can’t reach apartments above the ground floor. Buying gallons for showering, toilet flushing, and drinking isn’t a reliable option — the island has mostly run out. Even individual bottles are extremely difficult to find.
The word “hemiola” originates from the Greek words “hemi,” meaning half, and “holos,” meaning whole. In other words, one and a half. And so, a hemiola is a rhythmic pattern that uses a ratio of three to two, and the Greeks, ever concerned with ratios, noticed that three divided by two gives you one and a half, thus their description “hemiola.”

The in-depth tone controls also allowed the Space Echo to be manipulated and create some wild effects. If you turn up the intensity control as the echo fades out you’ll get this intense swelling effect that you can hear on many dub or reggae songs. If you change the tape speed or delay rate you’ll hear crazy pitch shifting and oscillating effects. Artists like Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Bob Marley have all used the RE-201 to create absolutely stunning music.
We all have our unique interests — mine in particular are quite diverse — so I encourage you to make a list of your own favorite multidisciplinary blogs, but to get you started, here are 10 of my favorite blogs, musical and otherwise, that continually inspire my writing process.
“Sunflower”: Sneaking into the last week of Top 5s for 2018, we have a consummate “B-side” to the other Post Malone songs on this list, with a short and sweet form — except for the fact that each singer’s verses use different melodies and lengths. And since we’re talking about lengths, the loop here is eight bars long, not your usual four. This makes it easy to chop in half for the shorter second verse, as well as the shortened outro.
Slap sounds are played similarly to a tone. Put your hand on the edge of the drum, but instead of playing with a flat hand, you curve your fingers lightly. The contact area is limited to the edge of the palm and the fingertips. The other difference is that your hands rebound immediately after a strike, so the contact time with the skin is as short as possible. Slap tones produce more of a ‘crack’ and a bright sound, but you’ll also notice a little bass resonance. Your hand should bounce off the drumhead so that the fingertip pads flick quite sharply on and off the surface with a slap. The pocket of space under the palm gives it a hollow sound.
In 1972, John Fogerty left Creedence Clearwater Revival and their label, Fantasy Records. After he released his hit solo album Centerfield (1985), label head Saul Zaentz of Fantasy Records sued Fogerty for plagiarizing himself. Zaentz claimed that the single “The Old Man Down the Road” infringed upon “Run Through the Jungle,” a song that he had originally recorded with CCR under contract with Fantasy Records in 1970. Though he was not found guilty, it’s pretty novel that Fogerty was sued for sounding too much like himself!
